TAUS Data Association Members Cisco, Dell, EMC, Intel and Microsoft join forces to share a global repository of language translation data
TAUS Data Association (TDA), a not-for-profit, Web-based platform for sharing language data, announced that Cisco Systems, Inc., Dell, Inc., EMC Corporation, Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corporation have for the first time begun pooling translation data in order to deliver information to global customers in their own languages faster, more cost effectively and with higher quality. The companies are all founding members of TDA.
Today, more language translation is done by machines than by humans. The development and improvement of automated translation technologies depend on having a great deal of high-quality language data, but even the biggest companies reach a limit of how much they can develop on their own. TDA provides the technical and legal infrastructure for sharing translation data among its members, enabling them to access a much larger repository of language data. TDA has collected 2 billion words of parallel data in 201 language pairs with plans to grow much larger. Recent pilots by Microsoft and others among the 45 founding members show significant improvements in translation productivity through use of the shared TDA data.
In addition to providing shared translation data, TDA offers a free language search engine for translated words and phrases in its repository of data. A desktop widget accessing this valuable data is also available for free.
“This unprecedented collaboration was four years in the making, but the results are well worth it,” said Jaap van der Meer, TDA’s director. “Shared data from the TDA next-generation, Web-based platform can help organizations reduce the cost of translation, open access to new language markets, and increase translation productivity. Having a cloud-based platform for sharing makes it fast, easy to use and safe to access this global data repository.”
About TAUS Data Association
TAUS Data Association (TDA) is a global not-for-profit organization providing a neutral and secure platform for sharing language data for the benefit of all. An outgrowth of the Translation Automation User Society (TAUS), TDA was founded in the summer of 2008 after over 200 companies and organizations across industry sectors provided guidance on the collaboration model. In June 2009, TDA launched its cloud-based platform with easy-to-use translation memory sharing services and a sophisticated language search engine, free and open to the public.
