A starter's guide to data sharing with TAUS Data Associations

World's Translation MemoriesThe benefits of sharing TMs

The simple idea is that sharing ever larger sets of language data, in the form of translation memories (TMs), helps to improve consistency of term use, translator productivity and machine translation.

  • Try out TAUS search to experience what we mean by improving consistency of term use.
  • Check out TDA member use cases to learn how others are increasing productivity and producing better machine translation. The benchmarks so far show 50% improvements on average.
  • Buyers, service providers and translators will also find it useful to visit the Why Join section to read about specific benefits for you.

Other approaches to acquiring large sets of language data

  • The main other approach is to trawl and scrape the internet. The issue is that the internet is already awash with sub standard translations.

Why TDA stands out when compared to other sharing approaches

TDA stands out when compared to other approaches to sharing as it is the only sustainable offering that is of benefits to and is open to everyone.

  • Proper governance model - members decide the direction of the organization
  • Independent and neutral - cannot be bought like a private company
  • Intellectual property rights explicitly covered - IPRs stay with data owners
  • Development roadmap aims for everyone to get the most out of shared language data
  • Non-profit model - prices go down as more members join

The future

The evolutionary path is clear; TMs moved from the desktop to enterprise server and are now rising to the “cloud”. The potential is for the translation industry to have a significantly bigger impact on the world. Companies using technology or translation memories to “lock-in” their clients will have to revisit business models to stay relevant. Translators will do less monotone translation and can start gearing up for more challenging, creative work. Buyers will get better and more translation for their money. Many more companies and industries will use translation.
